Key things to know about it contractor accountants

1

Limited company versus umbrella working

Choosing the right operating structure depends on your contract status and personal circumstances.

  • A limited company is typically the most tax-efficient route for contracts that fall outside IR35 rules.
  • Umbrella employment is required for inside-IR35 roles, where PAYE tax and National Insurance are deducted at source.
  • Limited companies pay 19% corporation tax on profits up to £50,000, rising to 25% over £250,000.
  • We provide seamless switching between limited and umbrella structures to match your current contract status.
2

Navigating IR35 and status determinations

Understanding off-payroll working rules is essential to avoid unexpected tax liabilities.

  • Medium and large end-clients are legally responsible for determining your IR35 status and issuing a status determination statement.
  • For contracts with small end-clients, your limited company remains responsible for determining your own IR35 status.
  • Outside-IR35 status allows you to pay yourself through a tax-efficient combination of salary and dividends.
  • Inside-IR35 status means your fee payer must deduct income tax and employee National Insurance before paying you.
3

Tax-efficient salary and dividend planning

Understanding how salary and dividends are taxed helps you structure your income tax-efficiently within the rules.

  • The tax-free personal allowance remains frozen at £12,570 for both the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.
  • The tax-free dividend allowance is set at £500 for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.
  • For 2025/26, basic-rate dividends are taxed at 8.75%, and higher-rate dividends are taxed at 33.75%.
  • From April 2026, basic-rate dividends rise to 10.75%, and higher-rate dividends rise to 35.75%.
4

Legitimate expenses for IT contractors

Claiming allowable business expenses reduces your company profit and your corporation tax bill.

  • Expenses must be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of running your IT contracting business.
  • You can claim computer hardware, software licences, testing devices, and specialized training related to your trade.
  • Travel and subsistence can be claimed for temporary workplaces, subject to the 24-month rule and supervision tests.
  • A flat-rate home office allowance of £6 per week can be claimed without keeping detailed receipts.

Workwell has administered my company since formation in 2014. I am very happy with the quality of the service that they have provided. Danielle and Ross, in particular, have been excellent in their roles as lead client accountants.
