What you get with Tax Returns
Key things to know about tax returns
Self Assessment tax returns
Individual taxpayers and sole traders must report their untaxed income annually to HMRC.
- You must register by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you had untaxed income.
- The online filing and tax payment deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year.
- Sole traders must register and file if their gross trading income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year.
- From April 2026, Making Tax Digital rules apply to self-employed individuals with qualifying income over £50,000.
Corporation Tax returns
UK limited companies must calculate and pay tax on their active business profits.
- The small profits rate of 19% applies to companies with taxable profits up to £50,000.
- The main rate of 25% applies to companies with taxable profits over £250,000.
- Companies with profits between £50,000 and £250,000 pay a graduated rate due to marginal relief.
- You must file your CT600 return within 12 months of your company's accounting period end.
Partnership tax returns
Nominated partners must report the partnership's income, losses, and share allocation to HMRC.
- The partnership itself does not pay tax, but it must file an annual SA800 return.
- Individual partners must also file their own SA100 returns to pay tax on their profit share.
- The online filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year, matching Self Assessment.
- Failing to file on time results in automatic £100 late penalties for every partner.
VAT returns and compliance
VAT-registered businesses must submit regular returns detailing their sales tax and reclaimable expenses.
- You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period.
- The deregistration threshold is £88,000 if your turnover falls and is expected to remain low.
- VAT returns must be submitted online using Making Tax Digital-compatible software like FreeAgent.
- Most businesses file quarterly, with submissions and payments due 1 month and 7 days after the period ends.
