What you get with Accounting Software
Key things to know about accounting software
Understanding VAT rules and deadlines
Staying on top of VAT keeps your cashflow healthy and ensures you remain compliant with HMRC rules.
- The compulsory VAT registration threshold remains at £90,000 for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years
- You must register if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, not just the tax year
- You must also register if you expect your taxable turnover to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone
- VAT returns are typically submitted online every quarter, exactly one calendar month and seven days after the period ends
Preparing for Making Tax Digital
HMRC is phasing in digital record-keeping and quarterly reporting requirements for businesses and landlords.
- All VAT-registered businesses must already use Making Tax Digital compatible software to file their VAT returns
- From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must use compatible software
- From 6 April 2027, the mandatory threshold for sole traders and landlords drops to qualifying income over £30,000
- Qualifying income is based on your gross business and property turnover, not your net profits
Corporation Tax for limited companies
Limited company profits are subject to different tax rates depending on your total earnings.
- The small profits rate of 19% applies to company profits under £50,000 for 2025/26 and 2026/27
- The main rate of 25% applies to taxable profits over £250,000 in both financial years
- Profits between £50,000 and £250,000 are taxed on a sliding scale with marginal relief applied
- Corporation Tax is normally due for payment nine months and one day after your company financial year ends
Self Assessment dates and rules
Sole traders, partners, and company directors must file an annual tax return to report personal income.
- The deadline for submitting your online Self Assessment return is 31 January following the end of the tax year
- Any tax you owe for the year must also be paid to HMRC by this same 31 January deadline
- Payments on account are due on 31 January and 31 July if your previous tax bill exceeded £1,000
- Failing to file your return on time triggers an immediate £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax
