What you get with Local Accountants
Local Accountants: what you need to know
Understanding your VAT obligations
VAT rules depend on your taxable turnover and require precise tracking throughout the year.
- The UK VAT registration threshold remains frozen at £90,000 for both the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.
- You must register if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, not just your financial year.
- HMRC also requires registration if you expect your taxable turnover to exceed the £90,000 limit in the next 30 days.
- The VAT deregistration threshold is set at £88,000, allowing businesses to deregister if turnover falls below this level.
Key Self Assessment deadlines
Filing and paying on time is essential to avoid automatic penalties from HMRC.
- For the 2025/26 tax year, the deadline to submit your Self Assessment tax return online is 31 January 2027.
- Any outstanding tax owed for the 2025/26 tax year must also be fully paid by 31 January 2027.
- If you are required to make payments on account, your second instalment is due by 31 July each year.
- Missing the online filing deadline results in an immediate automatic late filing penalty of £100 from HMRC.
Making Tax Digital updates
The government is phasing in digital record-keeping requirements for sole traders and landlords.
- Sole traders and landlords with gross income over £50,000 must use MTD-compatible software from 6 April 2026.
- The gross income threshold for Making Tax Digital drops to £30,000 starting from 6 April 2027.
- Under the new rules, businesses must submit quarterly digital updates of their income and expenses to HMRC.
- The final declaration and tax payment deadlines remain aligned with the standard 31 January Self Assessment date.
Income and dividend tax rates
Structuring your salary and dividends efficiently can help manage your personal tax liability.
- The standard UK tax-free Personal Allowance is frozen at £12,570 for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.
- Your Personal Allowance reduces by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000.
- The tax-free dividend allowance is set at £500 for both the 2025/26 and 2026/27 tax years.
- From 6 April 2026, the basic rate of tax on dividends increases from 8.75% to 10.75%.
